How to Be Heard Above the Noise

When most people begin marketing online there are a lot of expectations. They think the money will come rolling in the moment they create a website. I am not going to deny that profit can be generated in short periods of time. It has happened in the past and will happen in the future.  It helps to be at the right place with a great idea.

When you have something to offer and there is a demand for your product, most of your your efforts revolve around advertising. If what you are advertising is being offered by other businesses, then you will be dealing with competition. That being the case, you have to be able to create an urgency and reason for people to buy from you, otherwise you will customers to your competition and it is not because what they offer is necessarily better.

Why? It is because of the fact that not everyone buys on the first visit. Sometimes customers need a bit of time before they make a decision. So if you already exposed them to what you have to offer and later they see the same product on another site, they may be ready at that moment to buy. They may end up ordering from someone else that product or service which you took the time to educate them on the first place.

Since internet surfers are what is called impulse buyers, you got to be ready so that when a potential customer visits your site, she/he is ready to make the decision at that moment! Of course, the big question that is asked by those looking at what you offer is, “how do I know this person knows what she/he is talking about?”

So how do you add integrity? If you are an expert on something, can you tell me about your experience? Do you walk your talk? Does your site reflects what you talk about?

Does that mean that if you do not have a great resume people won’t buy from you? Absolutely NOT! Your resume could be your website. Here is what I mean, if someone visits your site and you don’t have a degree as a nutritionist, but your site is filled with very convincing articles and valuable information that shows that you know what you are talking about, that is enough to add credibility.

All you need to do is to come from a place of honesty and service, and as long as you can show credible ways in which your product will benefit your market, you should be able to sell your product(s) and/or service(s) online.

What really does makes people buy?  Value.  Value is derived by the Benefits (What am I gaining from this.) and Honesty (How do I know this is true.)

Create Content That Gets Shared

If you want to thrive on social media, then you really need to take advantage of the nature of the platform. Social media platforms offer us a huge amount of potential because they allow us to tap into real social networks and connections that exist in the real world. This in turn allows information to spread through that web of connections just as it does offline – and that’s where the concept of something going ‘viral’ comes from.

Viral content is essentially content that enjoys exponential growth. So you post something to your followers and they then respond by sharing it with some of theirs. This then results in their contacts sharing it with their contacts and if this cycle continues you can end up getting thousands – or even millions of views.

But of course in order for this to work, your content needs to be something that people want to share and it needs to be the kind of thing that naturally lends itself to being shared. Let’s look at some things that make this more likely…

The Psychology of Sharing
If your content is going to share as quickly as possible, then you need to understand why it is that people share in the first place.

And the answer to that is that people usually share to communicate and/or to express themselves.

A lot of sharing is basically narcissistic and thus the real reason we post is to tell the people we’re friends with something about ourselves. This makes us very likely to share content that we feel perfectly encapsulates who we are – just like we might hang a poster in our room if we like the message.

The other reason people share is because they think someone else will particularly respond to the content and in that way we are doing them a favor and showing that we’re thinking of them. This way, sharing content becomes a form of communication.

In both situations though, content thrives because it is tailored for a specific person. So think about this when you write your own posts: who is this for? What kind of person will share this?

More Tips

This will instantly help your content to spread but there are more things to consider as well. One is that very often people share content before they’ve actually read it. Rather, they base their decision to share or not simply on the title and the image.

What does this tell you? You need an eye-catching image and a great title!

Create a Brand That People Get Behind

If you want to make the greatest impact on the web, then it’s not enough to have a social account and a blog. Rather, you need to make sure that there is a brand behind that social account and behind that blog – something that ties all of your posts and all of your comments together under a single banner and something that people will feel is more than the sum of its parts.

But a brand doesn’t just mean a logo. In order to have a real brand that has fans, you need to know what it is that makes something like this work and how to go about building yourself an image and then gaining exposure for that image.

What is a Brand

If a brand isn’t just a logo, then what is it?

Well, one obvious thing that a brand also needs is a name. Your company needs a name and in all likelihood, this name will also be your website name. Having a brand like this for your website is one of the best things you can do right away to start getting attention for your business.

Google for instance has said that brands are far more successful at search engine optimization these days, while from a user’s perspective brands are also a lot more memorable and professional sounding. In other words, calling your website ‘FitLand’ will work better than ‘FitnessAndHealthArticles’.

You also need a visual language. Once you’ve created your logo, you’ll also have had to choose some colors and maybe some images that will relate to your business and that will form the basis of these logos. Now you need to take those colors and shapes and work them into everything else you do. If your logo is red, your website and your social media pages need red accents.

Your Mission Statement

What’s more, is that you need to create a mission statement for your brand. This is in fact what should come first and in many ways, it is the most important step.

Essentially, a mission statement is a short paragraph or line that says what your business is about, what you do and why you do it. This is your goal, your vision and your commitment.

From here, you then have a more inspiring vision that you can use to form your other choices – such as your choice of logo and name.

Now your logo stands for something. And when that’s the case, people can stand behind you.

How to Make Posts Interesting

There’s one big problem with the huge amount of content on the web now…

It’s that some of it is not interesting.

Unfortunately, a huge proportion of the social media posts, blog posts, articles and even videos that are on the web are simply boring. They tell us generic things we already know, they do it in a style that’s not engaging and they have dull, descriptive titles.

Think about how many articles you’ve read in your lifetime with titles like: “How to Get Great Abs!” or “Top Ten SEO Mistakes”. Probably hundreds right? And by now that kind of thing is just old, tired and boring.

If you want to stand out and be heard then you need to make sure that what you’re putting out is interesting, different and unique. Here’s how you do that…

Come Up With Something Fresh
If you look at a flock of sheep which one always stands out? The black sheep right? You need to be that black sheep when it comes to the chorus of content on Facebook and Twitter. You can’t just post the same articles and topics that everyone else is posting or you’ll just blend into the crowd. Instead, you need to offer something that people can’t get anywhere else and that is completely different.

How do you do that? One option is to come up with something entirely new by combining different subjects, or by giving your own personal take on a popular subject.

Another option is to just find the latest and most exclusive stories you can. That might mean reading scientific reports or scouring press releases. It takes more work but the result is something that’s much better!

Tell Stories
Now you have the subject, the next thing to consider is the delivery.

And one technique that never gets old is to tell stories. If you can report on the same thing as everyone else but give your version a narrative hook – a beginning, middle and end with a protagonist – then it will be much more compelling and much more enjoyable to read.

Think about when you’ve read a good book – sometimes it feels almost as though you’re coming out of a dream when you stop!

Or how about watching a movie and completely losing track of time?

With a great story, you can have the same impact on your readers. And then they’ll be hooked!

The Power of Online Communities

Back in the early days of the internet, forums and “message boards” where all the rage. These were pages on websites where people could log in and post messages on the subject of the site and this way they could discuss their favorite topics, get advice and maybe even make friends.

The potential for marketing here was obvious too – find the right forum and you’ve basically found a spot where all of your potential audience are hanging out in one place!

Over time, these forums started to disappear though, partly thanks to the popularity of social media which made them in some ways moot.

But while forums might not exist in their traditional form any more, that’s not to say that there aren’t similar communities online. And re-tapping into these can be very beneficial!

How to Find Online Communities

For starters, many forums and message boards still do exist. It’s just a matter of finding the right website that has its own forum that has managed to stay active.

But otherwise, you can also look for other tailored groups on the web. One good example is Google+. Google+ is a social network just like Facebook, but it also happens to have communities within it that you can become a member of and then discuss your favorite topics in. Once you’re a member you can post to any of these communities.

Another great place to look is Reddit. Reddit has lots of “sub Reddits” which are pages devoted to particular topics and you can find pretty much everything under the sun here.

And finally, you also have Facebook groups. Facebook groups are like pages except they tend to be made by fans of a certain topic and have a more democratic set-up.

There are many more similar groups online but these are some of the best examples.

How to Use Groups

If you have the perfectly tailored article for a particular group, then you can join and then simply share it. This is a great way to get hundreds or even thousands of immediate views for your site right away.

A better option though is to spend some time there first and during this period to build up trust and familiarity in the forum or group. You want to become a regular and someone people get to know and begin to rely on. Now when you post, people will look out of interest but also to help you. If they feel almost like friends then they can become incredibly valuable assets for promoting your site!

The Secret to Success in Social Media

What it the secret to success on social media? The answer is simple: delivering value.

First, however you’ll need to change how you approach social media. Instead of thinking of this as a chance to promote yourself, think of it as a chance to give a free service to your audience or a solution for marketing or business. This should be the same audience you’re trying to monetize but in this case you’re offering something completely free whether that is information, entertainment, news or inspiration. Either way, people need to look forward to your posts and know you offer help or service; that is the secret to success in social media.

Creating your profile or brand in social media is an important way for your readers to know you.   One of the easiest ways to set up your reputation and build exposure is to make contact with other marketing professionals through the use of social media.  Although there are many social media sites, the three most popular ones continue to be: Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.

  • Facebook is no longer just a place where old high school buddies and long-lost co-workers to get together and chat about what they are doing these days. For internet users around the world, it has become a part of their everyday life. Because millions of active users are constantly logging onto Facebook; it is a practical way to brand yourself as the expert in your niche.
  • Twitter is a social medium where people will often post short notes on everything from personal events to business opportunities. Tweeting tips, sharing information or posting links back to your website or blog, makes you engaging, accessible and continually reminds customers of your value.  In addition, you can connect (by following) others in your niche and form new relationships that may become mutually beneficial.
  • LinkedIn has been used by business professionals mainly to network with one another. When you set up your LinkedIn profile, make sure that you always focus on what will attract other members.  If you are able to attract interest then you can use LinkedIn for another important aspect of the LinkedIn community – getting recommendations from members. When you connect with other people on LinkedIn that you already know or do business with, ask them for a recommendation this will show up on your profile.

Not sure what to post? For example:  If you sell fitness products, you could offer a good service to your audience by posting new workout ideas or inspirational quotes every day. Maybe you sell clothes, then how about posting images of outfits to give people ideas?

Then, when you want to make a sale, you offer a genuinely exclusive discount. You have the ears and the trust of your audience and now you’re providing a limited time and exclusive opportunity. That’s the secret to success on social media.

Creating Profiles in Social Media

Creating your profile or brand in social media is an important way for people to know you.   One of the easiest ways to establish your reputation and build exposure is to make contact with other like-minded people through the use of social media.

Whether you are new to working online or not, how you create your profile in social media will directly impact your success online.  My favorite social media platform, of course, is Facebook. It is easy to use and it’s a world-wide marketing tool that will help you become known, liked and trusted – the three most important factors in marketing.

Why do I prefer Facebook for my social media activity?  It’s probably the most recognized logo in the world (except, quite possibly the golden arches of McDonald’s :). If you use it correctly and set yourself up as real, you’ll be someone who people want to associate with.  Do not use it correctly and you’ll be brushed off as an annoyance.

Whichever social media platform you prefer and whether your account is a personal (just for posting to family or friends) or a business account (used primarily for online marketing), there are certain guidelines to keep in mind:

  • If you want to be approachable, use a profile photo that is really you.
  • When you make posts consider your target audience and how they will react to what shows up in their news feed.
  • Your timeline defines you. For example as a marketer, posts about goals, creating your dreams and a positive mindset will attract like-minded marketers.
  • Never speak negatively about people or companies.

It is important to associate and connect with people in the same niche as you. People will associate with others who will like and comment on their posts, then they will share, like and comment on your posts.  This activity shows up in the news feeds seen by their friends and associates, increasing your visibility.

Engaging people will increase your popularity (i.e. your brand – you).  As you become known and trusted, posts you make will be noticed, clicked on and followed.  What is the benefit of building your presence online?  When you do promote an offer or opportunity, it will be seen by your followers, their friends and their followers and people from all over the world.

Every action we take needs to take us closer to reaching our goals (business or personal).  The best ways to accomplish any success, is to continually be recognizing opportunities and even creating your own opportunities.  This is nowhere more true than online with social media.

Blogging: A Great Marketing Tool

When adding new posts or updating blogs, you need to add good content.

  • Always make it fresh and up-to-date. In this way, search engines will include your site in their directory listings. When your blog is listed in the different search engines, you will increase traffic to your site without paying for it.

Many people read more than one blog on a regular basis and once your ranking improves, the traffic to your blog will increase. Maintain your blog with relevant updated content and you will gain a following of loyal subscribers and readers who will begin to like and trust you.

How to Start Blogging and Stick With it

Having positive thoughts produces positive results. Never say “wish me luck” or “hope this works” and if I had my way, we would remove these phrases from our vocabulary. It is not about having “luck” or “wishing”, it’s about taking action and believing in yourself. Let’s blog.

Blogging is a sure way to promote yourself or your brand. Blogging requires an individual to first get a domain name and a blog host. This is followed by creating a blogging avenue such as WordPress. Once this is achieved, embark on a journey of formulating content that will add value to your followers. Let us now divulge more information about how to start blogging and stick with it.

Decide your topic

Blogging requires focus and a prior plan. It is crucial to decide on the topics you will blog about. Understand your short-term and long-term blogging goals with regards to the topics you write about. Have a clear purpose that communicates what you intend to write during the first few months of blogging as well as the rest of the blogging period.

Create visual content

The photos, images and other graphics that you integrate in your blogging endeavors can either undermine or magnify blogging. Have unique images and photos that make your posts stand out. To access quality visual content, do the research and find a site that provides stock photos, royalty-free images that you can use.

Build your list

Creating and increasing a mailing list is fundamental to success in marketing when starting and sustaining blogging. A mailing list enables a blogger to share posts with followers and increase interaction with visitors. This also helps in generating traffic for the new blog as opposed to entirely depending on search engines.

Blog often

Once you have decided your niche and want to prove yourself, blogging demands consistency. Do not just write a few posts and be contented. If you want to attract and keep up followers and appear on search engines, you have to write posts frequently.

Use other social network platforms

Blogging successfully involves sharing the content through social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and even LinkedIn. Sharing the blog posts with your network of followers through these platforms increases visibility to other people. This increases traffic for your blog by attracting more visitors.

The First Step: Get Started

WELCOME!

I’ve learned a great many things that have helped me grow and have success, easily. On the other hand, I have also learned a lot of things the hard way, by trial and error.  Why am I sharing what I’ve learned?  Because it’s Noteworthy and you can take it away, use as needed, benefit from from my experience and be heard above the noise.

It’s tempting to take the easy road at times. It’s even easier to just put something off altogether and say, “next time”.  We procrastinate saying, “I’ll do it tomorrow”, or “I’ll do more the next time.”  And what happens?  Tomorrow and next time come, and we put it off yet again.

Having a partner on your team it the best way to help you keep your eye on the “bigger” picture and stay focused.  A partner will help you with your training, provide motivation and keep you going in the right direction. Working with others helps you to gain information as you learn what works for them and what does not. Part of doing research is to check things out and see what other people have to say. You never want to spend your time on something that will not bring you value or be able to be used for your success. You’ll never get that time back.

I know it’s a proud moment when you can say, “I did it all by myself!”. It shows you have strength and determination.  But as we all know, its human nature to postpone things that are challenging, and it’s at these times more than ever, you need a partner to help as they share their ideas and strategies. Making sure you have a coach or partner in your circle of peers to help you stay accountable and keep you taking action.

Always keep in mind the importance of creating a plan. Set your goals and plan your ideal future, whether it be building a successful business, improving your financial situation, optimizing your health, etc.; and keep in mind that you will succeed by surrounding yourself with people who believe in you and in your success.

To YOUR Success!
