During this time of stress, we are seeing all kinds of “giving” going on in our community and it should motivate us all to be involved. However, if you are hesitating to rise up and get involved, here are these some of the reasons that may be holding you back.
LACK OF BELIEF IN YOURSELF.
Deep down inside (or maybe not so deep down) you don’t think you know what to do it or how to do it. Developing self-confidence and a belief in yourself is a key component to our motivation.
YOU'RE FEELING OVERWHELMED.
Perhaps you just have too much stuff going on right now, and you need to clear your plate. You might be procrastinating because you don’t want to deal with what is already on your to-do list.
YOU BIT OFF MORE THN YOU CAN CHEW.
While self-confidence is important, it’s also good to be realistic. Any goals and plans should have realistic expectations so you can fulfill them.
YOU'RE AFRAID. Believe it or not, you could be procrastinating and avoiding getting involved because—get this—you’re afraid of the changes that will come about if you get involved. Confront your fears by writing them out, and process them with a friend or loved one.
YOU LIVE IN THE PAST. You may be circling back unnecessarily to previous experiences with community involvement and getting locked into the story of how it didn’t work out so well that time. Wipe the slate clean and move on—if you live in the past, you’ll never be able to move successfully forward.
When you comprehend the bigger picture, it will be possible to see how getting involved in your community benefits you in the long-term. This is an opportunity for all of us to be part of the solution and not the problem.
Now is the time to embrace the challenge and help "fashion" the change.
